Messiah was to be given vinegar to drink when He would thirst. Instead of water Yeshua was given gall mixed with vinegar to drink when He grew thirsty as confirmed in Matthew 27: 34-35 (NIV).

Gall mixed with vinegar was a drink of Roman soldiers. It had an intoxicating effect and could numb the pain. For that reason, it was offered to the victims of crucifixion to bring them a little comfort from all their pain.
Yeshua, too, was offered this mixture but refused. He wished to take the full punishment and not diminish any of it by numbing the pain. There are times we wish to numb the pain of what we are going through. God understands. He grew thirsty on the cross too. Yet still let us not become so intoxicated by the world and its wine that it would dull our senses. Let us instead rely on God. For if we endure the suffering but for a little while, great shall be our reward.
