MATTAN - GIFT

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 (NIV)

MATTAN

(1)

INTRODUCTION

To operate in the spirit realm, one needs a spiritual gift. All of them come from the same Spirit, but manifest in different ways. None is greater than the other, for all is for the common good in the end. The Hebrew word for spiritual gift is mattan.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS

Who doesn’t like gifts? Receiving them is a joy; even more so is giving them. Today, I want to talk about some other types of gifts; gifts more similar to skills and talents. To operate in the spiritual realm, we need spiritual gifts. There are different kinds out there, but the same spirit distributes them. In other words, they are all manifested through the Holy Spirit.

MATTAN - THE HEBREW WORD FOR SPIRITUAL GIFT

The Hebrew word for a spiritual gift is mattan. It means gift, gifts, and derives from the verb nathan, which means “to give”. (2, 3)

The word describes a tangible gift, present, or offering extended from one person to another. In the biblical context, it can be applied to:

  • bride price

  • priestly portions, and

  • diplomatic or conciliatory presents.

THE GREATEST GIFT TO THE WORLD

There is one gift that was given millennia ago that is above all other gifts - Yeshua.

For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called

    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9: 6 (NIV)

Onto the cross He went to secure salvation for you and me. He knew that a price would have to be paid so He could receive His bride. What a sacrifice. His sacrifice secured eternal life for those who believe. Eternal life in Heaven, where there will be no more pain or sorrow.

CONCLUSION

As a christian we need to learn to operate in the spirit realm. We need spiritual gifts to do it effectively. All of them come from the Holy Spirit, but they do manifest in different ways. The Hebrew word used to describe a spiritual gift is mattan. It means gift, gifts, and derives from the verb nathan, which means “to give”. There is one gift that was given millennia ago that is above all other gifts - Yeshua.
