SAGAV - REFUGE

Sagav

(1)

INTRODUCTION

Storms are bound to hit us. They are bound to be part of our world. I used to believe we were meant to walk through the storm until the meaning of the word sagav was revealed to me. It means to be high, exalted. To be brought to a new height so high above that the storms can not even reach you.

STORMS, TRIALS AND PERSECUTION

God never promised us a life full of peaches and sunshine. John 16: 33 (NIV) says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

As Yeshua said in this world we will have trouble. There will be difficulty, trials, storms, and persecution. He also said He has overcome the world and to be glad and cheerful. 1 John 5: 4 (NIV) reveals why, “… for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.”

In Yeshua, we too are promised a life of victory. We shall overcome it all if we learn to rely on Him and His strength that is.

I used to believe that you just ride out the storm and go through it. But the true meaning of the word sagav, the Hebrew word used for refuge in Psalm 9: 9, made me think again.

SAGAV - REFUGE

Teacher Chaim Bentorah says, “The word “refuge” is a very unusual word in Hebrew to be used in the sense of a refuge.  The word is “sagav” which means to be high. The picture is a refuge in the heavens or outer space, a place that is inaccessible.” (2)

He goes further and mentions his experience on a flight where they rode above the storm similar to what I got to experience a couple of years back. He adds, “This is what sagav is, this is the shelter that David is speaking about.  We are not going through the storms or being protected in the storm, but God is taking us into a new height where the storm is not accessible to us.” (2)

King David knew that only in God’s hand can we truly find protection. Manmade shelters can not keep us safe from every threat. Only God can. And He is willing to lift us above the storms chasing us.

IN SHORT

Storms are a part of every believer's life and they will come. But our Lord Almighty is our refuge - sagav. He is willing and will lift us above the storms and they shall not reach us.

Application

Next time when a storm is hitting you, turn to God, your shelter, and ask Him to lift you above the storm. Above the troubles you are facing.
