THAT WILL BE YOU ONE DAY - BASEBALL FLASH FICTION STORY

Updated: Jun 19

The smell of hotdogs, popcorn, and roasted peanuts invaded the nostrils of a young boy. The familiar clanking sound resonated throughout the air accompanied by the crowd's cheers. There amidst it all, Victor Beckerman sat in the upper decks behind home plate. Nine he turned today. This baseball game was his birthday gift. His father, an avid New York Yankees fan, passed the baton on to young Victor.

Despite this being his first visit to the ballpark, he already felt like he was home. Before the game began he was feeling such peace, serenity might be a better word, with a tinge of excitement. The roaring of the crowd with every hit of the ball rose in Victor his inner warrior and cheerleading side. The longer the game went the more his thoughts turned inward though.

Victor, always known for being a dreamer, started dreaming at the age of 3. After receiving a ride-on-car for his birthday, he dreamt of racing with cars. Then he entertained the thought of becoming an astronaut at 5. Being a firefighter was his thing at 7. So it was to no one’s surprise that his thoughts wandered into a dreamland state once more.

There he was standing on the mound staring at the catcher’s hands for a sign. Considering the pitch, he nodded his head and prepared for his windup. Setting his body in motion, he raised his hands into the air. Brought his right arm around and then came the snap. The ball was released. Whoosh! The ball hit the mitt with a booming sound! “Strike three, you're out!” set into motion a humongous emit of cheers and screaming. “Big V, Big V, Big V” the crowd shouted. “This boy is destined for big things” the announcers were heard saying. So caught up he was in this vision - for Victor would later say, this dream was unlike any other before - that he nearly missed the game-ending home run. As he watched the players celebrate, he heard a voice say, ‘That will be you one day’. Dismissing it as his own, he went on without even knowing that a good seed was sown.

Until next time!
