The Lord is my strength and my shield;

my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.

My heart leaps for joy,

and with my song I praise him.

Psalm 27: 8 (NIV)

Shield

INTRODUCTION

“Ever be vigilant”, they say. And right they are. The enemy is sending fiery darts towards us daily. Lies to raise doubt, deter us, disappoint us, or discourage us. But if we put the armor of God upon us daily and raise the shield of Faith in our defense, they will fall to the ground and fail. “What did God say”, we should ask ourselves and pray.

SHIELD OF FAITH

Clung!, echoes in the night.

Clung! Clung!, my spirit is awoken up to fight.

Whoosh! was heard then,

another fiery dart was sent.

Clung!, was heard once more,

hitting my shield it fell to the floor.

Stopped by Faith before it struck me,

the Truth of God setting me free.

In Ephesians 6: 10-18 (NIV) we are warned of the fiery darts of the enemy. How we need to be constantly vigilant and on guard against them. For the enemy does not sleep, they say. But then again neither does our Lord.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Ephesians 6: 10-18 (NIV)

We are told to put upon ourselves the armor of God daily. And among them happens to also be the Shield of Faith. Through Faith and trusting in God, trusting in His Word we can extinguish those fiery darts sent to hit us. Those lies satan sends to deter us, disappoint us, discourage us.

When met with opposition, disappointment, strife, or calamity there are two ways a believer can respond. They can either respond as a citizen of the Kingdom of God and ask themselves a) What am I going to do?, or respond as a Kingdom ambassador and ask themselves b) What did God say? (1)

Armor of God - Shield of Faith

Opposition will come, especially after God has given us a promise. To combat back we must rely on the Word of God and ask ourselves: “What did God say?” For what God said is truth. Though it may be true, that we are going through some hardship at the present moment, it is God's Truth that will prevail in the end, but if we only believe.

CONCLUSION

When fiery darts of the enemy are flying towards you, put up your shield of Faith. Lean on the word of God and ask yourself: “What did God say?” For though hardship you may be going through, God’s Truth will in the end prevail.

Application

During the upcoming week when disappointment or negative thoughts try to overcome you, turn to God and ask, "What do you say?".
