Melchizedek, “King of righteousness” and “King of peace,” was the King of Jerusalem when Abraham walked the Earth. He was considered the priest of the Most High. And he happened to be the one Abraham gave a tenth of everything he owned to, as described in Hebrews 7:2 (NIV).

Melchizedek was a representation of the future Messiah. Yeshua did strike a fine resemblance to Melchizedek. The wine and bread were symbols He used at the last supper. Also, God proclaimed Him as a priest after the order of Melchizedek forever.
The order of Melchizedek represented the priestly kingship, where the King also happened to be the religious head of the Nation. For society to function properly, it is essential to have order. And that order is established through authority. And not just any kind of, but a righteous one.
And the King of Israel was also to be versed in the scriptures precisely because of this cause. So that the nation would be led by a man submitted under a greater authority, and that is God Almighty Himself. And also be submitted to righteousness.
Great leaders lead by example, they say. Ever watchful are people. We as disciples of the Messiah need to be ever aware of the example we are setting for others. We are representatives of God and His righteousness and righteous deeds. And His image is what we need to strive for.
