Israel has fallen away from the Lord. Into captivity, God’s chosen ones went. Then regathered in Jerusalem they were once more. But it did not last. They fell under Roman rule as did many other nations around them. Oppressed, and without a future as a nation they seemed to be.
But we serve a supernatural God, a God of planning. He had a plan as He always does. A virgin, an almah was to give birth to a savior. A sign it was to be to an oppressed nation.
Almah derives from a root meaning "to be full of vigor, to have reached puberty". It is a word that denotes a woman ripe for marriage and a woman of childbearing age. Though some argue it does not necessarily mean a virgin, it is also stated that in all but one case when used in the Bible it was used to describe a virgin. (1)
The greek term parthenos has a similar meaning. It normally referres to an unmarried woman of marriageable age, which confirms the virgin birth even further. (2)
As seen before, Yahweh once more brought a mighty deliverer into the world through supernatural means. It was so with Samson and Samuel. And it ended up being so with Yeshua which can be seen in Matthew 1: 18-21 (NIV)

A supernatural birth for a supernatural Savior. The deliverer of all humanity - the Most High Himself. All so that He would be without sin. If He would have been born of a human father, he would have inherited the curse of Adam’s sin for sin is passed onto us through our fathers. And Yeshua needed to be without even a blemish. (3)
